How to monetize an entertainment/gaming fansite

    Hi guys,

I'm the owner of a very large gaming fansite for the game of Neopets (about 10K-14K visits per day, up to 8k-10k abs unique). Right now I'm using Google Adsense and I'm getting about (I think it's ok to say this, it isn't an "official Adsense stat" but I calculated it myself) $0.02 per click!?!? Can you believe this!?! It cant get much worse than that. And the thing is is that these advertisers are getting HUGELY massive exposure. For $0.02 a click. Yup. That's messed up.

This is a common topic of discussion these days but what is the best way to monetize an entertainment/gaming site?? The niche totally sucks in regards to ads. I was thinking of not using any 3rd party ad people (like Adsense, YPN, ValueClick, etc) and selling advertising directly through myself (e.g., people will pay me directly for advertisement, I set the prices, etc). I just don't know anymore. With this amount of traffic, I'd like to at LEAST be able to make $500 a month, maybe even $1000. So... what's the best thing to do in my situation? Any ideas?

    Thanks, DPers. :D

Haa a dissatisfied adsense client :D welcome to the club lol

As you said, no 3rd party ads like adsense but have people advertise directly via you.

If you can get a 100 a month, you'll just need 10 of those to make a grand.
That should be pretty obtainable, seeing you've got around 10k-14k visitors a day (approx.)
    That's 300k a month.

Just give it a try for a few months, with adsense paying 0.02 you won't lose out on much if it fails, and that's IF it fails. And if you succeed. You've just got a grand more spending power for you or your business.

    greetz,

Fuck Adsense, and other such low-paying ads.

Tipem, have you looked at other sites similar to yours and looked at their ads?

Yes, you can make $1,000 a month by putting the ads in yourself.

You get around 8,000 uniques a day?

You could start off charging a 30-day spot for, say, $100 a month. Multiply that times 10 advertiers, and there's your $1,000.

Add more pages, and make even more money.

Believe it or not, it's easy. ... If you have the traffic, that is.
