If you are good, reliable, honest and deliver on time - do not think about under pricing your service.

B'coz, most who under price normally are not good/unreliable/ not honest / hardly deliver on time !!

You get what you pay for -- so better deliver as you've charged :)

Search google for graphic design forums and then join them each and post around with your link (im assuming you have a site where you provide these services) for the people and then provide the services.

Its usually good if you have MSN, AIM and etc for good contact while serving, and it helps to have some examples of previous work that might attract people.

    Good luck.

Pricing actually needs to reflect the effort you produced to achieve your design.
If it's seems underpaid then there's something that's kinda unclear..

I've had several New Designers thank me for compiling this short list of sites that aided them in:

    1.) Building a Portfolio
    2.) Branding Themselves
    3.) Public relations
    4.) Acquiring Clients

You may find it useful too :) - Building a Freelance Portfolio -

Great for those just starting out - DigitalPoint's on one of the lists as well of course :)

    I wish you Luck!

Be the best in your niche.

It's a simple statement, but one that takes years of dedication and hard work to achieve. All of the clients that I have, have come through word of mouth. This is simply the best advertisement that you can get and isn't something that can be bought. If your reputation precedes you, you will have no need to do any marketing.

A few tips on how to get there:

    - produce the highest quality work you can, consistently.
    - do something you love to do. this means individual projects, too. make sure that before you take on a project it is something that you are interested in working on.
    - pick your clients! remember that when you agree to take on a project, you are also choosing to work with a client. the wording in that last sentence is very important: you are working WITH someone, not working FOR someone. keep the playing field level.
    - build up your portfolio by always choosing the best projects and finishing them to 110%. each project you do will be better than your last.
    - be nice! i can't stress this enough. people that are easy and comfortable to work with, but stand by their values, these are the types of people YOU would want to work with.. so BE one, too!

that's about it. best of luck!

Specialize in a niche and be good at it, under bidding people doesn’t work for long you will go broke and fall on your face. Especially now days there are people in India and Nigeria that will work for $1 a day.

Customer service is a big part of it also, a lot business can come from repeat customers and word of mouth.

it appears i didn't get back in time to edit my prior post & add another resource for you, so I'm posting it separately. I figured since you mentioned Marketing, I might as well share a resource I compiled last year for marketing in general (No matter what your product or service is).

You'll probably find this resource Bookmarkable or printable, at any rate here it is: 240 Marketing ideas

Combining my previous references for building your portfolio & the 240 marketing Ideas (To be implemented once you have a portfolio to look at), I'm sure you'll be well on your way to establishing yourself! :)

Good luck, Enjoy, & I wish you the best of success!

Buying text link ads on design related blogs has helped grow my design clientele ever the years, and it's usually very inexpensive to purchase one of these ads.
