How to market our comic in a competition?

    Hi,

I'm part of the team that has created a new comic called The Foxtones (it's about a time-traveling girl band, with a robot, an alien and a former gun-for-hire!). It is competing in this year's Small Press Idol contest, which is essentially a contest amongst a group of new comic projects, with the winners getting their issues printed and distributed.

A big part of winning is gaining votes, so we'd like to know how we can improve our online marketing efforts, particularly in the immediate short-term. We've already got a website up at http://www.thefoxtones.com, which is currently just a WordPress blog we post news on from time-to-time.

One of the main methods of gaining votes is getting readers to download our preview issue, which is available as a PDF file from this link - http://www.smallpressidol.com/site/dload.php?id=22. Votes only count when that link is used, so what would be the best way to promote that link and get readers to download it and check it out?

    Thanks!

All we need to know is how to market our comics in the Internet, which has little to no overhead fees or charges. More time can be effectively spent on developing the webcomic better, or to have private time for oneself.

I'd try facebook and twitter, viral voting is big these days and gets a lot of attention. If it's a good comic, then you don't have anything to worry about :)

Are there any other good sites where we can quickly get the word out to a lot of people?

I would definitely setup a Facebook fan page and twitter account and link from your site. I'd also probably hire someone to make some youtube videos to put out there as well to get more exposure...maybe some press releases as well.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll give them a try. I've set up a tinyurl link and it's been working well so far. So if there are any comic fans out there, check out our high-res preview of The Time Travelling Foxtones 1st issue @ tinyurl.com/foxtones

There are no real quick fixes for exposure, building up a fan base takes time and effort and in most cases a bit of creativity. The best place to start would be facebook/twitter, both are free and have massive global reach.
