How to market my site to small and micro businesses

I have a new website (currently with just a holding page) www.getmeastudent.com that has 2 major target audiences; Students and Small Businesses. Reaching students online for free or cheaply, is comparatively easy than reaching small businesses. I am running out of ideas. The net is so wide (anyone from Hairdresssers, Plumbers and Builders to Architects, Restaurants and Cafe's) that focusing effectively is causing me a headache! Anyone got any good ideas for reaching several small business areas online with a shoestring marketing budget!!!!? Many thanks

Don't get too wide... create a niche website or you will fail!

Maybe you need to focus on a particular target audience to begin with, or at least start with. Or you could target general employment websites. Is that the focus of your business? Employment services?

Pay per click is the most evolved advertising known to man... for new websites.. pay per click is the way to go.

Pay per click is too expensive for people on a shoestring budget. Especially if you're not familiar with it.
I also agree that you shouldn't go so broad ... choose a niche or sub niche.

What really matters is that you are able to come up with a promotional campaign that can make your target readers sit up and act on your message.
