How to market an arcade website

If you want to market an arcade website, bring something to the table that no one else has done before. I've been in the arcade and media business for a bit of time but I never seemed to get it to work. I think I know the reasons why and I can list them below.

    Content!
Of course having a big gamepack is useful. Who doesn't want to visit an arcade with over 2000 games? One thing a lot of people don't understand though is that even if you have a lot of games on your website, either most of them have the original arcade's advertisement at the beginning or the game is on almost every arcade website. The visitor will most likely just go to the website that is advertised.

I would suggest that if you have the money, go around and look for flash coders and pay them to make you an original game. If you do that, I can guarantee that your website will stand out. Don't just stop there though. Try to make that game stand out of all of them. Make it a featured game on the front page or something.

    Design!
I personally think that making it glossy or look shiny or anything won't make a difference. Look at www.mostfungames.com. That has a very simple layout but it has good content. The design is not really what you need to focus on. Of course you want your design to be different than the default design that comes with the script you are using but no need to make it fancy.

    Script!
To be honest, I don't really think that the script you use matters. I do think that if you want your arcade to stand out, that you should purchase copyright removal. Of course, a custom script would benefit you way more but I don't think it matters either way. People don't really notice the difference anyway.

    Marketing!
This is probably the most important thing of all. If you want your arcade to succeed, you have to promote by mouth. Telling your friends at school or telling your son (Rofl!) is probably the best way to spread it. If you tell your school friends, they will pass it to other people, and then they'll send it to other people, etc. I usually tell my friends in computer class and they go there immediately. I also send mass e-mails to all of my MSN contacts. That brings in awesome hits!

Advertise on other arcade sites and media sites. The biggest and most popular arcades are most likely too expensive to advertise on but if you advertise on entertainment websites with at least 10,000 unique hits per day, then you will get hits.

Link exchange and banner exchanges are really good to use as well. Link exchanging will get you better PR and more hits and banner exchanges will get you good hits. I would suggest against buying credits for banner exchanges unless the click through rate to your site is good. Sending around a few Myspace bulletins won't hurt either.

    Conclusion!
In general, if you don't have a lot of money to advertise an arcade, you can make it through with reasonable outcomes but if you want your site to be big, you need to have the money to back it up for custom games, script, and advertising. Good luck and until next time!
