How to market a social-network around launch?

    Hello everyone,

I always see threads about single websites, but there must be differences in promoting/marketing a social-network.

I don't have any online marketing expiriences at all, so please feel free to even explain newbie-stuff to me.

    These are my particular questions:

    - What are good methods to make the website well known even before and right after the launch date? Like...a splash-page? Twitter? eMail Newsletter? AdWords!?

    - What are the "go to" methods to get companies wanting to advertise on your network/ website and pay for it, WHEN YOU ARE JUST LAUNCHING?

    - How long will it take from launch to actually seeing any money from advertising?

Hopefully I got these question delivered clearly.
If you don't understand what I mean, just let me know :)

I have heard people get good results with facebook fan page and marketing it with facebook ads cheap. Just do updates daily.

Find high traffic websites that deals with your social networking niche or topic and deliver valuable content and in return have a URL back to your social networking site
