I am midway through setting up a music website that is aimed at unsigned bands and solo artists that want to get their music out there, in an itunes style website, and we are starting to think about marketing, we have done the standard directory submission and word of mouth advertising. Does anyone know what sort of advertising works with this sort of website?? I have tried to contact some bands on myspace music but so far haven't been lucky. Hope someone can help. Since your website is not popular now,you'd better try all the ways you can to gain more traffic including paid ways and free ways.It'll be better after it's known by more and more people.Of course,the guys you want them to join in are there too.
start a facebook page for the website as well as a myspace and keep contacting many many bands and musicians that are out there.
Videos will definitely work great for your niche. Another way is to hold a contest. Maybe offer some free music. Artists probably won't mind you giving away free music when it will get their name out there.
Maybe you can organize a small concert of the local bend in some small club. Create stamps that you will put to customer hand when they enter the place with your logo and give the customer some fancy flayers which will also include info about the bend. Everything depends how much money are you willing to spend on marketing. Depending on that there are tons of different ways how you can do this.
I would think that targeted advertising on forums, music sites, and the like would work well. Also consider viral-type marketing such as Youtube videos and the like.
