How to market a game that is not so hot with many competitors?

So this could go into General Marketing but SEO is really important to me so I thought it would be good to post in SEO forum.

So here's the scenario I'm in:

My company has a game that already has many competitors. When I say competitors, I mean, they've got the same game as we with differences. What do I mean by that? Take a game like UNO or Checkers and modify the game 20 different ways (change the color, layout, settings, rules, name of the game, etc.). The company I work with along with like 10 other companies have the same game but with differences in each game.

Also, the companies who I am competing with that are actually in the top 2-3 in the search engine results for specific keywords have already setup a foundation. When I say foundation, I mean the company has already made numerous games on their platform and those games have been developed to go cross-platform and can be played on any iOS device, PC, MAC, etc.). My company only has one game and is only available on the iPod Touch, iPad, and iPhone.

And it's also hard to get reviews and backlinks because our game doesn't stand out that well. Review sites never email me back and the only email I've gotten back has told me that they will review our game if it "looks cool" and their review editor staff "likes our game". I actually sent them two emails and they replied to both emails using the same response so I have the feeling that they didn't put much thought into the email. It was just a pre-made canned email response. Also, web 2.0 blogs that have made it into the first 2 pages on yahoo and google for specific keywords I am targetting have articles whose comments section are closed. So it's a difficult challenge to get backlinks.

I've blasted out press releases as well as posted on the top 4-5 forums related to my company's game.

Any ideas you guys can give me? The game my company has gets 400-500 new users each day and has around 49,000 average active users so the game definitely has potential. From the analytics we have, the US isn't ranking our game very well but Japan is ranking us high.
