hmm.. i used to make some download site and what i did is: 1. if it is a commercial program, give a free trial link from the software site. 2. if u want to give a full download link, try to find post in warez site and link it to the post in warez site. 3. you can be an affiliate with amazon, ebay or other online store

It will be different from other traditional download sites. However, I think I should build up the basic contents and features first before I add the new creative things. I think that since your competitors have established and well known sites you can't afford to add features step by step - you need to launch with a complete service. I'm sure you've done a proper business plan to ensure that the time and money expended are not going to waste - surely your market analysis showed that users won't use a non-competitive site?
That's an extremely simplistic approach. How you market a blog full of critiques is very different from how you market a company's online presence to marketing a download site. From being a software publisher trying to get listed tucows I was able to see that they took an incredibly methodical approach to testing the software they delivered so that they, in turn, could market their site as having only quality downloads. I bet they weren't doing that on volunteer hours so it's one angle you have to compete against. Warez: the moment you get accused of having warez on your server you will start to have some big problems as far as hosting and promotion go. Unless you have vetted each download for distribution rights the warez stigma will stick.
