Hey. I have a question. What is the best way to manage a retail operation (ie: restaurant, grocery store, hair salon) without being fully active? Is hiring a manager the only option? Many thanks!
Yes, a retail store cannot run itself, it would require a team to get it working. The higher the stake a person has in the business, the more hardworking they would be. So if you opt to offer someone a store manager post, link his bonus to the store performance and you be sure he would work harder. If they just get fixed pay whether or not the store makes money then you be sure the whole business would go down the drain. Technically if the boss is not personally concerned about the business, it is hard to get people whose life is not affected by the profitability of the business to care. I am sure you been in school before. When was the last time you see a class behave when there is no teachers around ?
Yeah. I guess the bonus system is the best. I wouldn't want to give stock ownership to any new employee.
I know a lot of retail stores that run with absent managers. Trick is to structure the store such that the manager has to do very little of the day to day stuff, if any at all. Second is, in typical army fashion, have every worker know the role above them as well as below them, that way absent workers can have their roles filled in.
