how to make wordpress safe from hackers??

    I use wordpress version 2.9 for my websites, but someone has hacked my site then change title of my site, all of my existing websites in one hosting receive the effects. if anyone knows how to make wordpress safe from the hacker???

    for the record, initially iam using wordpress version 2.8, after the hack, I tried to repair and replace with wordpress 2.9, but the same people still had hacked my site, help me please
