I have a fress PC with real IP.

I want to make my pc a web server so that my php-mysql sire runs fron that pc.
I am familiar with XAMPP. If I setup XAMPP to that pc then will it turn a real web server for world wide web access?

If not, please tell me how can I made my sever. It is really urgent for me.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

Hosting your web site from a home PC is actually not quite easy to do. It takes a lot of skill and experience to configure the required services that a web server needs. A web hosting service can provide you a better service. Not only is it difficult to do, but it also costs more money to do it yourself. It’s cheaper to go with a professional web hosting service then leaving your PC on 24 hours a day.

An old webserver is pretty cheap. I found a Dell PowerEdge 2GB of RAM and Dual Core 2.8 ghz Intel processors for £30 (about $45) on EBay. That's more than powerful enough for a basic website and you can use optimization of code and DB, tools like APC etc to eek out more performance. That would be my preferred route. In theory a PC could be converted but the hardware isn't usually built for hosting (ie being switched on for weeks at a time).

The machine I got was running a very old Windows NT. I cleaned it down and installed Ubuntu Server 10 (free) with LAMP. Getting it all up and running is an education and there is loads of reading material on the net, and if you're just hosting personal sites you don't have to worry if it falls on its face once in a while providing you do regular backups (and shared web hosting is far from secure anyway, I've had my personal sites hosted with Namecheap hacked about 6 months back (along with lots of other people), and they didn't even bother to restore my files for me). Biggest challenge is connection speeds and static IPs rather than hardware and OS, but again you'll learn far more than throwing your cash at a hosting provider. I'd go for it, you'll get a lot from it even if you ultimately decide against hosting yourself, you won't regret it.

well, you need to have a high speed connection to put your website online
also, don't forget that you need backups so that even in case of power failure it won't go offline
i have tried that lately, my suggestions would be to find a cheap host & you will find it much better then hosting from your own box

    Hi :)

If you are just hosting some personal site, nothing important that needs perfect uptime (since you don't have any redundancy running from home!) and for certain nothing anyone is paying you to host this is really simple to do.

If you're running windows you can use AppServ http://www.appservnetwork.com/

If you run linux on the machine you can follow one of the many tutorials at http://www.howtoforge.com/

and if you're on a Mac there is MAMP http://www.mamp.info/en/mamp/index.html

Dead simple to get you up and running with Apache, PHP & MySQL so you can run a website using anything from plain HTML to WordPress, Joomla etc.

Turn an old computer you don't use anymore into your home server. It's free. As for how, nothings simple if you are somewhat experienced in this. Google it, there are endless "how-to's" online now a days.
