You're probably not going to make much with Adsense on your blog if you just put them on the side or by your articles, instead I would start a directory on your blog and put Adsense on it. If you had a blog about mountain bike racing, you would have all your articles and then a directory section that listed bike makers and other relevant categories. Directories have some of the best click through rates with programs like Adsense, you can make the ads look just like the directory listings. Think of it as your links section and every time someone click on a Google link you get money.
The easiest way is with affilate marketing, high payouts usually and if it is with your topic then $$$. Thats why I dont think pay per post is going to make much because you gotta drop a random post about jimmy dean sausage on a vegatarian blog. That would kill your fan base.
Adsense + affiliate programs is a nice mixture adsense is standard, but there's a whole lot of choices in the world of affiliate programs. You've got to choose them according to your blog's niche
You need to write about something interesting. I went traveling for two months and my blog had a load of hits and I made a fair bit with Adsense thanks to it. A lot of the activities I was doing on my trip appeared as Google ads which helped lol.
