I have heard that it's possible to make money playing game but I'm not sure how. My guess is that we bet? Yeah, I'm a big time Halo 3 gamer and would love to find out if I can make money doing that. Does anyone know anything of this?

You can make money playing in events like competitions. There was one going for $1,000,000 dollars but it would be too late to signup. http://www.thecpl.com/?p=1870 Other then that, I can't think of any other way to get paid to game other then to be in such competitions.
I haven't heard of any betting systems for XBox games. The only one I've heard of for games was for PC shooters and that one could barely find any players. I think you're out of luck.
Go to big tournaments. Prize money is over 10k at times. If you're really good, you could play in a global league against the best of the world, and make a ton through sponsors.
You can't make cash for the typical gamer, you need to go pro which takes a bunch of time, practice and skills. Getting sponsored and running with a team is your best bet if your serious. Tournaments local and online. Personally, although I'm pretty decent (lvl 40's in most types) I wouldn't want to waste my time.
