    Make the graphic in any software then use IrfanView to convert it to a icon.

    In Gimp you can save straight in .ico. No need for conversion software!

    If your going to use Photoshop, i would recommend using tutorials on Adobe.tv
    That's where i get most of my ideas.

    Does anyone have any software for the same or any reference website where we can get help in this ? I am really looking for the same as i have got a chance to create icon for a website. It will be helpful for me too.

    It depends on your business, what king of product you are promoting. There are plenty of techniques to design an icon.

    Adobe Photoshop cannot directly save .ico files. You will need a preset. But that can be obtained for free over the internet.
