In my opinion you should put what you feel are your best works in the portfolio. If you feel one or two are lacking, do not include them. If you like everything that you have got, then I would include it in there. Personally, i've seen designers have several pages on their portfolio with each page containing probably at least 20 designs / logos that they have done. I like it, it gives me a good feel for their style and quality.

To making a good portfolio you need good content to put in there, also a simple and efective design and you get there.

What I have seen from design companies is that they display a list of all the companies they did work for. Then they just show thumbnails of their best work. I think this is the best route to take: you display only your best, and clients don't have to waste time digging through your portfolio, yet they can still see the list of clients.

Remember to also display variety. A client may not like a specific style and if your entire portfolio is done in this style, then you won't be hired.

I think include the ones that you think will make people use you. And dont include the ones that you think will make people walk away from doing business with you.

    Quality over quantity

I guess 3-5 good designs will be great for a portfolio as I don't think tones of designs will help to impress. Also, quality is over quantity. As others have said, you should not show off every design of yours. If you think it is not good, keep it. Don't publish your designs just to make up the numbers.
