How to make directory favorite by Google?

What we should do on our directories to make them more good and valuable in the eyes of Google?

Should we list only high PR sites?

Should we offer only free listings?

    Or something else?

    Please share your opinions.

Take in an apple on monday morning :)

Theres lots of things, dont offer sitewides, convince them that you dont sell links, never tell a soul about the existence of your directory.

Promote it hard without going over the top.

    Don't sell links?

But if it is a paid directory? it means I am selling link to the site owners and submitting their sites. Or it is not called a 'Link Selling' ??

Its about denial basically ;) of course its link selling but like most things out there its repackaged, much like google themselves sell links but they call it Sponsored Links.

A lot of people refer to it as reviewing submissions, an incorrect term though because a review to me would include writing up an article about the submission that you reviewed. :)

Do something unique and you will be loved by search engines :) Pipes is right in saying you shouldn't be selling sitewides. Also try to write unique descriptions for your listings.

OK, just got a quick question.

Having too many nofollow links on a single page can hurt my directory?

Proper use of Meta tags, unique content and quality back links. But what's the need of having a directory with NoFollow attribute?

i agree with @discover sometimes i will rewrite back what they submit... like description and title. and it would be fast index by robot also you must be good review what they submit, like spam keyword... or something like that... always make a unique directory...

I have an idea in which I will have to use nofollow.

If it is not going to hurt my site ranking then I will go ahead and start working on my idea :)

Add unique content to each category of the directory along with site listings. And that will make your directory love by google. Just check www.mastbusiness.com .They have done a great job.

I don't pay any attention to Alexa ranking, it is not accurate ranking because it can rank only that traffic which is using Alexa toolbar.

However I prefer Quantcast.com because it ranks my site considering "All" traffic my site receives.
