If you can get their email address, you will have a way to invite them back.

Also, user-generated content always creates a sense of community which inspires visitors to return.

    Thanks,

It's not JUST content, it's the type of content and how you use it. Like others said, update daily. But if you establish yourself as (for instance) the blog that always updates the quickest, or has the scoop on something, people will expect that and want to visit daily.

For instance, on my blog I have a lot of weekly coverage of certain tv shows. So when American Idol comes on, we get more people purposely visiting our site a few times a week to read what we have to say. Mailing lists and RSS are great too.

I like using this site as a good example of a good site.

    DavesDaily.com

It has good content. It downloads fairly quickly for dial ups. The ads aren't overpowering. In fact, there are ads there that add to the site in a good way. The site itself looks nice, user friendly.

Check out a tool called RobotReplay.com. It records your visitor's mouse movements when they're on your page, so you can see exactly what bored them out and where they spent a lot of time.

Bingo, that is the key. Content in the form of a timely weekly newsletter is the best way to go. You build a lasting relationship and you turn visitors into return visitors, and statistics show that return visits equals a higher purchase rate.
