    You will need a type of forum software. A few types are phpBB, vBulletin, SMF, and yet there are many more.

    I would post the links in which to obtain said software, but I am currently not allowed to. :p

    If you need me to go into more detail, or need any further help, let me know. ;)

    Since you're a beginner at this, I'd suggest making a forum using a free host. Once you have more experience, you can then move onto paid hosting.

    Here are some free hosts I'd recommend:

    www.InvisionFree.com (used IPB software)
    www.Forumotion.com (uses phpBB software)
    www.ProBoards.com (uses YaBB software)

    The first thing that you need is a niche that you are interested in. If you are starting a forum just for the heck of it, don't !!

    So the first question is the topic ... Please prepare for the next question which will be your online experience, software experience and available time.

    Thing of a subject that interests you, if you are thinking about making money, then also consider what it is and if there are multiple forums about that already or not.

    Secondly, think if you want to get a forum for free or purchase.

    If you get it free, you can go to the suggested links at the top, sign up, and start making categories{topics}, and editing the design using #colors or however the forum allows you.

    If you want to pay, it is a lot more complicated as you will have to install the script manually, unless you use Fantastico {which most hosting companies come with if you have cPanel}

    Then, advertise :)

    SMF is very easy to learned. I was completely new to it about a month ago and now have a forum ranking on page 1 in google for it's niche.
