You need quality links from sites that have some PR.

If your blog is about example:mountain biking then find other sites about mountain biking or related topics and leave you backlink on those pages. Of course you need to find do follow BLOGS, FORUMS, or DIRECTORIES. This way you can just comment and leave your link behind. Make sure your comment is relevant and not one of those that are like "nice post very informative." Try to write a paragraph or so talking about what is on the page.

Unfortunately search engines cannot appreciate beauty. They can only crawl and index the content. In short, words and content are needed, not graphics. Try to write unique content, and then get backlinks to your blog.

Other posters are quite right about looking to be sure you have great content and backlinks. Remember to use some social media sites, too. Facebook, Twitter, Stumble Upon, Digg. All those things can help you get the word out about your blog. But for better PR, nothing beats backlinks and regularly-updated, quality content.

    Good luck!

Google loves fresh content. Try to update your blog at least two times per week. Ping your blog so that the search engine spiders will be summoned to your site. Keep building up those links. Aim for getting links from high ranking sites. This will help propel your site higher rankings. Dissect other blogs within your niche. Use Yahoo Site Explorer to find out where they are getting their links from. Copy their efforts.

Two times a week? More like two times a day, is what can be called fresh content. Two times a week is roughly 8 times a month ..... I doubt you can call that persistent maintaining, more like casual.

Try post at least once a day, but more is always better. Make sure your content is UNIQUE and as wiggs said, Google loves fresh content.
