How to limit # posts per page

So I am using WP 2.7 and had a question. How can I limit how many posts show up on the main page? It seems that all the blogs I have just have too many posts and the main page just continues down, to the point where you have to a scroll for quite a few page-lengths to reach the bottom. Here is the page in question:

As you can see, the first page is just huge. I want to shorten it, like maybe by a quarter, just to help with appearance, and not to mention load time. Also, this is my second blog, so if you guys see anything else that I should change, let me know, any type of insight would be great.

Go to "Settings", then select "Reading".

There's also a plugin that'll make excerpts out of your posts, just do a search at the Wordpress site or Google.

geez! Thanks guys, sorry, that must have seemed like a dumb question. Ok, got that down, now is there a way to just show a post summary and not the whole post on the front page? I'm trying to fit the most amount of posts, in the least space possible, a lot of my posts are pretty long, so showing 3 or 4 posts is good on the page size, but doesn't do me much on the content side. I do notice that my other blog does this, but the only difference between the two is the theme. Does that have something to do with it?

You have a number of options.

    1. The normal way is to use the <!--more--> tag to differentiate excerpts from full posts. Only the bit before the "more" will show on the front page, category pages, etc.

    2. You can do this with the Excerpt Editor Plugin

    3. If you don't care about where they get cut, you can limit snippets to a set number of characters with the wp Limit posts plugin

Hmm, the plug-in works great for what I need, but it messes up my theme lay-out. Particularly, it brings my sidebar and puts it right below all my posts. Any insights into why the coding would cause this?
