How To Lighten phpBB... ?

Do any of you know of any ways I can make phpBB use less computer resources? I want to avoid spending extra money on upgrading hosting, but I am having issues with computer resources.

Are there any good phpBB mods that reduce the amount of CPU resources it uses?

After analyzing the log files, it seems to me that the built-in search feature in phpBB seems to be taking up the most resources. It doesn't just use resources when users perform searches. Every time someone posts each word in their post has to be indexed. Is there any safe way to remove the search feature from phpBB?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Scott

Added on edit: I'm using version 2.0.22 of phpBB.

I just moved to a private server, so this is no longer an issue.

Nonetheless, I have been told elsewhere that phpBB 3 is heavier than 2 and uses more resources.

    Thanks,
    Scott

no no bb3 is in small forum the same some queries up or down (we talk about 5-10 que) but in huge forum membres:> 5-10 000 is better to use bb3 because there is better code whit integrated mods wich is in bb2 like addons not integrated
