Given that the underscore disappears when the link is underlined, I prefer the dash, it gets rid of the white space, and keeps the meaning

Use hyphen. May be that's the best option to use. And use the alt tags on all the 20 images. But remember that all the alt tags should have different alt texts so that google doesn't think you are doing keyword stuffing for your images

Definitely example-image. Google has previously documented the fact that a hyphen in the URL is regarded as a space, while an underscore merely suggests a space.

i don't think its going to make a major difference (naming images)
however, we all know that using alt attribute is good (if you are looking for good rankings in google images)

The answer to your question is to use hyphens(-). Hyphens are seen by search engines as word separators.

Now there is a lot more to image optimization. As you probably know, search engines don't have eyes and cannot see images.

The best way to make those images visible to search engines is to :

    1. Save the image file name as a keyword/key-phrase that you wish to rank for.
    2. Add a title to the image also containing the keyword/key-phrase you want to optimize.
    3. Add an alternative text containing keyword/key-phrase as well.
