This varies from niche to niche, part of the marketing game is figuring out how to get them to your website. There is no golden egg that someone can give you that will be the end answer.

For example, if you are into Quizzes or Survey's, Facebook might be a really good avenue. But FaceBook sucks for actual sales most of the time. The reason I say this is because I've already tried it out several times. People hanging around on Facebook are not typically interested in buying something. They are there for leisure, so the conversion rates of Facebook in sales is pretty low. That doesn't mean there are aren't specific markets that could benefit from advertising there. There are tons of affiliate marketers doing well there.

Well it all depends what your website is about. Do you sell products or services? Do you offer, or belong to, affiliate programs or referral programs? These are all things you have to take into consideration when you are about to promote. You should have an idea what your niche is, depending on WHAT you are offering. For example, if you are selling cat and dog clothing and accessories then your niche is "People who like pampering their pets or People who love accessorizing their pets". If what you are dedicated to is related to web marketing, then Facebook and myspace may not be of much benefit. As PHPGator said, the vast majority of the people there, are only there for socializing. This is not to say that promoting there is a waste of time. As long as you add friends that have similar interests, or are there to do business then you can begin to develop a good contact list, which could eventually turn into possible sales. Remember, that regardless of the method of advertisement you use, statistics have proven that it takes a person an average of 7 times, viewing an Ad, before they make a purchase.

Stop. You're rushing ahead and then dipping in to ask quewstions with no context. Let's go back to the beginning. What are you trying to sell to who online?

If you have a product then find where your customers are. Search in Google for your keyword + forum and look at niche forums.

If you have the customers and need products then see if clickbank has a solution to begin with then create your own product that solves their problems.

If you're certain that your product is quality, consider what it does. Does it show people how to lose wight around their abs? Does it show people how to make money online? Does it show people how to improve their golf swing?

I agree that you should start with niche-related forums and study the types of questions that are being asked. BTW, make sure you've actually checked out your product and know what it can provide. If you're simply selling a product that you've never checked out yourself, don't even bother trying to sell it. You can't give your best promotion if you don't know what it does and how it does it. People would be able to tell this and it would reflect badly on you.

You can also go to Google Keyword Tool External, type in your keyword and see other types of keywords that pop up. Those keywords will give you an indication of how many people are actually typing in those words every month. Those keywords can be used in articles, blog posts, you can create You Tube videos and use those keywords as tags to attract people interested in your niche market.

I'm a firm believer that you should foundational training in making money online. There are so many different skills: article marketing, keyword research, forum marketing, search engine optimization, list building, pay per click marketing, paid advertising, social media...the list goes on. It can get expensive if you try learning these techniques separately versus in one place. Get a foundation in the skills then specialize in the ones you like.

Why not ask them? Ask your customers how they are using your product or service and how they learned about you.
