Check the nameservers of the domain and you can usually find the web host if the site uses shared hosting. But it will be difficult to check the web host if the site uses a VPS, dedicated server. Then you have do check the site's ip address and DNS records etc.

First of all, you have to ping your site. For example,

    ping digitalpoint.com
    PING digitalpoint.com (216.9.35.59) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from systemofadown.digitalpoint.com (216.9.35.59): icmp_seq=1 ttl=54 time=178 ms
    ^C
    --- digitalpoint.com ping statistics ---

Then check the given ip address via Whois lookup , for example via http://dnsstuff.hostony.com/index.php?fWhois=216.9.35.59 and you will see the owner of the server ip address.

i am always using who.is/whois/yourdomainname.com, then find it on "DNS Information" Section.
