Yes, you can use services like "whoishostingthis[dot]com"
a proper whois query can also reveals some useful info
most important part is the I.P address of the website

Doing a search on the domain to get a list of various IPs - web site, email, and sometime DNS - and then searching on the owner of these IP addresses is about the most you can do. Sometimes searching through the page source code can reveal things too.

After that, it's priviledged information of the IP range owner, if the host doesn't make their details available on their web site. If there's a problem you usually need to contact the owner of the IP range, and they may pass it on down through the ranks to whoever is ultimately using the IP address. Most larger hosts, even if they are buying their transit from someone else, usually have their own allocation of ranges. If the host doesn't even have that then it suggests that they are a relatively small host, most likely a reseller of someone else's systems.

It's not alway easy but as SSC suggests, the owner of the IP should give you some sort of clue, but may not give you everything you want to know, and it may not be possible to find out any more. However, a host hiding themselves to that degree, shouldn't be trusted in the first place.

I agree, DNS should be stated clearly and all trusted hosts do this.

For hidden DNS, getting information of IP and then judging through it is the only option.

ping the domain to find the IP it is resolving to and use online IP-Lookup tools to find the hosting provider!

Only sometimes will hosts use private registration but if you have legit reasons for knowing more information you can easily call the provider or the provider of where the domain is held, there is generally a specific number to call or one that is listed in the whois results.

If you for sure want to find out the provider.

    DNS the domain/host

Go to arin.net for united states and lookup the ip address, or ripe.net if it's out of the united states.

You can check the WHOIS and then look for the IP, you will find your answer. Domaintools is the best answer.
