You can check the traffic and Alexa ranking to know this.If Alexa ranking is good then it is search engine friendly.

Also, a good criteria is to register only on directories which manually approve new websites...this way they have a better authority

There is alot of web directories which claim that thier websites are Search Engine friendly, maybe they are not, but u dont need to post on every of directory, text them with online SEO tools, then post, maybe after posting on some bad directories(claims search engine friendly) u find ur self in panic in search engines

Check website page rank, alexa, and also when directory started. For Example, A Directory with Page rank 3 and started in 2006 will be considered more important, than a directory with page rank 4 in 2009.

So, I hope you understood :)

We can check various criteria like PR, domain age, alexa rank and also we can check google penalty for that directory. so we dont end up putting our link on the penalized directory.

when you do a search for you keyword look at other links in the top ten. If you see directory listings ranked then its a good indication that the directory is good.

I think most of the members have given very useful suggestions. One particular suggestion made by "digital29" is very true. Make submissions to directories that manually approve links. It may be time consuming to get your link approved, but that link will have higher value due to the quality of the directory.

Also , before you submit to a directory, take some time to go through the directory. Ensure that it's not just another 'link farm'. The directory should be well structured. There should be proper categories for different types of websites.
