How to know how much CPC to pay?

Can anyone tell me how I could find out how much other advertisers are paying for for CPC at sites with adsense placement?
I want to start some adwords placement campaigns, but I dont know how much to pay per click. If I bid too low, my adds wont show, and if I bid too high, I will be paying more then I could otherwise get away with. If I could know how much other advertisers on paying for for placements on specific sites, I could just place a bid a little higher and have my ads show no problem.
But I dont even know if the ads shown on the sites are from direct placements, like what I wanna go for, or if their from the content network part of googles advertiseing.

So really all I want to know is how much I should pay for placements ads for them to show and be maximum price optimized.

And if Im already asking this, then btw, how could I know how much other advertisers are paying for at the keyword placement parts?
and I hope I wont have to buy some expensive keyword anylizeing tool (although if that's the only solution to my problems, then just say so).

    Thanks in advanced.

What I have found with Adsense, is that even if you start your bid too high, you only pay just over the next best bid. So you never really pay too much unless your key words are really common. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ian Bauer, I see you registered to DP just to answer my question, thanks for that.

So if I place a really high bid for adsense ads, then Google will just adjust the prices for my ads to be only a bit higher then my competition? Are you sure? Do I have to enter a "highest bid cpc" scheme, or a "preferred bid cpc" ppc method?

    Can someone confirm this plz?

And I still didnt get an answer to my other question: How could I know how much other advertisers are paying for for either adsense ads or keyword ads? If the only answer is a keyword tool then just say so then.

    Thanks again
