To know general information about the competition, just use Google adword, It's free. For specific about competior on your keyword (number of their backlink...) I suggest using Market Samurai. It's paid soft (~97$ at least) but you can have 2 week trial, enough to analyze your keywords.
Go to semrush then enter your domain. Then check the result in "Competitors in organic search" part. Your competitors will be shown there. To deep analyse them, enter that competitor domain as you did for your domain.
Depends on what you want to know about competitor. If it's adwords strategy, you need to discover their winning keywords/ads and for that a tool like "keyword spy" will be useful. I use Traffic Travis. They have an SEO tool which lets you look at look at the top sites for the keyword your targeting. You can break down the results to the backlinks and anchor texts your competitor uses. Hope that helps. Have a good day!
