Hey Dp'ers- Any suggestions from experienced web marketers on how to kick off a new site? i.e.- I dont really think small directories, small # of forum sig posts, email marketing etc is the idea.. SEO is also not what im talking about...seo happens over time. Anyone who knows seo realizes you can get a site indexed in 24 hours, but you cant rank top 3 on the big se's for some time...backlinks et al are contributors to this.. What Im interested in knowing from those in the know, is how they promote a FRESH site- ie..how to locate and determine sites that have visitors that are similar to those desired for one's new site to go get a link on..cause it seems one of the best ways to seed a new site and get some visitors is to get traffic from large, related sites.. Suggestions are not only appreciated, I will buy you a cold one for good, solid info..
a trick that works often but not a guranteed ethical way of publicity: post links (dont spam) in community websites like orkut, myspace, etc etc.. offer games, and other fun stuff along with your original content to attract visitors. market a bit in chat rooms. that should give you the necessary kick!
To kick off a fresh site first of all decide in your own mind that you are going to spend atleast 20 to 30 days in marketing it. [Sometimes this depends on your speed] Get some onpage SEO first. Think about keywords and then start researching them. Make a list of keywords which are relevant to the topic of your site. Now if needed then change Title, meta tags, footer text and on page content in such a way that it does reflect the useage of the keywords in the list. Write fresh unique and keyword rich content for your site itself. Generate a sitemap and submit it. Get a directory list and kick it off into 1000 dirs to get started with. Write 5 articles related to your site's theme and submit it to article sites. Get some links on forums from sig or from reviews. Tell your friends if you have to blog about it. Find some other webmasters with similar themed sites and exchange links with them. Again dump it in 1000 directories more. Wait for somedays to see the effect and if you think you are not satisfied and still have energy left then write more articles, exchange more links and get more bloggers to post about your site.
Well there is something you can do. Its called web traffic. I recently purchased a reseller account for a year. it has this feature and it brought 10.000 hits in the span of 3 days. My host has various options for this. it works great. There are services out there that do this.
Google and Yahoo are your best friends, submit your link to them ASAP, but before you do make sure you know what keywords you want to target. Then GOOGLE this keywords: "marketing a website" Let the collective knowledge of people enlighten you on how to do this. Also, this is a an old guide a friend of mine wrote, it's still good. Step One: Preparation Before going out to proclaim the glory that is your website, first make sure it’s in tiptop shape. Was your website carefully and professionally constructed? That includes content copy. It’s vital that your copy (the text on your website) be written well, including a logical flow, clarity, good sentence structure, wise word choices and proper grammar/punctuation. Studies reveal the average Internet visitor is getting more sophisticated and expects features, such as proper language use (whether English or another language). Fail in this area and you’ll lose business. It’s that plain and simple. Now that your copy is humming, how is your search engine optimization? Did you at least look into some basics? Search Engine Optimization is the act of making your website search engine friendly and more likely to appear under the keyword phrases appealing to your targeted audience. While it can be a complex process, the basics should include having your pages search engine friendly, containing some keywords to attract your target audience. Once these two components are satisfactory, you’re ready for the next step. Step Two: Links Your website needs links. Today, even a simple link exchange can be complicated. Many website owners don’t want to reciprocate links with a new website. So how can you advance if you can’t get links? Thankfully, there are alternative solutions. When you’re first starting out, don’t spend too much time trying to find websites willing to link with you. Instead, work on establishing yourself first. Today’s Internet world revolves around content. Website owners across the globe are just waiting for free content from people like you. So the best way to gain links to your website in bunches is by providing content to other websites—also known as “promotional articles.†These articles offer other website owners something of value. The result? Your new website receives many one-way links from other websites easily. Naturally, your article needs to be written well to succeed. Simply throwing words down on paper doesn’t cut it. The better your article is written, the more it will appeal to website owners. In the end, you’ll glean more worldwide coverage, which is what you want. Not a writer? No problem. You can visit PromotionalArticles.com and have promotional articles professionally crafted for you. Simply slap your name on them and away you go. And even if you’ve written your own article, I strongly suggest using their editorial service. As every good writer knows, all writing should be professionally reviewed and polished by a savvy editor before publication. Step Three: Promotional Articles & Repetition If possible, you want to release a few promotional articles, at the very least. Timing is important. For example, if all you have is three articles currently, space their release. Don’t release them all at once. Promotional Articles can be fast acting. Yet, it really depends on the market the article is geared toward and how well it is written. I have seen my articles end up on other websites within hours of release. Once released, the search engines will begin to pick up the fact your article is on other indexed websites. When this happens, your back links go up, which can continue for quite some time. Without a doubt, you’ll discover the process for releasing promotional article to the world quite simple. At my website, JasonAMartin.com, there is an article all about how to do this. Step Four: Further Linking Once you have allowed a little time to pass after step three, your website will begin to take hold. When it does, it’s time to seek solid links on other websites. Stick to websites that are either on the same topic or related. For example, if you owned a website that sold cheese, receiving a link from a website that sold motor oil wouldn’t be beneficial. However, receiving a link from a website about cheese or wine would. As time permits, search for smaller websites in your field, then see if they sell advertising on their front page for a small fee. For example, one night I found a website, which was set up decently in the search engines and was on the same topic as one of my websites. The site offered a homepage text link for $2 per week. I not only received a nice link to help my search engine status, but a possibility for highly targeted traffic as well. The Internet is full of on-topic websites for you to locate for potential profitability.
The best method depends on your niche and the type of visitors you site aims at. If you have a content rich site, make sure that your site is well optimized for the search engines as it will bring you a good number of visitors. If what you need is a number of dedicated visitors, then try to promote in sites that belong to your niche. Like forums, groups, chatrooms etc. If your site is article related, then I would advice you to try major social bookmarking services.
thanks- some good responses...and good info- Purchasing traffic USUALLY will not work, since most general traffic farms send broad, unrelated traffic. AS I mentioned initially, forum posts and comments etc usually will not work either to any great effect, unless your site has INSANE viral effect.. And linking is related to seo, so unless you are talking about linking to your site, from a related site in your market with HUGE traffic, this as well will not do too much.. Site content/purpose DOES have alot to do with promotion as Aragorn appropriately mentions, but seo is a LONG TERM strategy.. I know what works for me in this business, but was curious what others utilize or have an opinion about. The best thing I can add is that Web 2.0..the social "revolution" of the web makes it possible for sites to EXPLODE in just DAYS..not weeks or months, as seo demands and requires.. Thats how you see sites for sale or commented on, that have lets say, 20,000 daily uniques etc, and did that in lets say 1-2 weeks... It IS possible, that traffic is RELEVANT and REPEATED, and done entirely WITHOUT SEO... Food for thought, people- Brian
which market are you talking about? Paid traffic works to a certain extent depending on how good you do on the keywords. If you are talking about internet marketing website, i think forums are still the best for it. One thing is all you need is to advertise your service or products at a cheaper price at the buy/trade section to get the first wave of traffic. And ask them to promote for you. Another method is through ebay, I have not personally used this yet but I've read reports and it works for some markets. 3rdly, you can find JV partners. This is not really easy but it's a number games though. if you can find good partners to help you market, it'll really boost your sites fast. however building relationship with this website owners take time. 4th, become a guest author in famous blogs... this is by far one of the fastest means of traffic I've ever gotten... However, the quality of the traffic may not be there. and this applies to social bookmarking sites. however if you are selling advertisement, quality of the traffic doesn't really count much.

The most important stage of any site is the launch day in my opinion. You have to prepare everything so that they day you launch you become a sucess. I always like to start my sites good from the beggining. I usually do membership sites and make money from them and then even flip some. But for me what helps most is to have a responsive email campaign
BrianJump, I do understand what you are talking about... sigs posts, email marketing and other worked yesterday, but these methods will not help to drive traffic to the web-site today, especially, if this web-site is new. I think that now the best option for marketing _new_ web-site is article marketing + links buying. That is what we are running for our new products and it works for now. We are getting good positions for a web-site in about 2 months. I think that it is a good result are we are keeping budget low (50$/month) and do long term investment in article marketing. I think that you can do everything about article marketing yourself, e.g. research market, write content, submit and track results. If you are interested in turn-key service, I'll be happy to assist, you can check service details in my signature and PM me with your questions.
