Find out who are your competitors and "view souce page"
    1.Analyse their keywords
2.Take a look at the back links and the anchor text.
3.Domain age and PageRank are also important

Lesson #1 - Go to the search bar at the top of this page and enter "keyword research", without the quotes. This type of search is called broad match. What you will get returned are thousands of great posts in this forum, in this exact thread, that will give you all the info you will ever need about keyword research.

Use the Google Keyword tool, but make sure to select the Exact Match checkbox and compare your totals with that number.

There are many methods that you could use to find relevant keywords.

One method i like most goes like this:

    a) Insert into the keyword tool the url of your competition without www
    b) Extract in csv all the keyword you get
    c) Copy them to notepad or other word editor
    d) Insert the first 100 keywords back to the google KWT
    e) Copy additional keywords into the notepad

This method will give you around 1000 keywords that are related to your niche!

Can anyone recommend any free programs besides google's keyword tools? It's always better to have some additional data sets to analyze and compare.

I use a variety of tools for keyword research. I use Traffic Travis (free version)...this software is awesome! I use MicroNicheFinder (paid) and the Google keyword tool. By looking at all 3, I can get a good picture of what is going on with the keywords.

I use Traffic Travis along with Google Keyword Tool. Both are free and has features like the keyword finder in Traffic Travis that lets you know not just popular keywords but which products to promote based on these keywords.

As a lot have people have already mentioned, the google keyword tool is excellent. I also use Market Samurai. It's got some excellent filter features on it and along with Domain Samurai, which comes for free with the package, it was money well spent.

I think it cost $149 but there was a discount if you used the trail version first. I can't remember how much.
