    Hi all

you see domains advertised for sale with pagerank, but is there a way to keep it? Ive tried it, but it seems to reset to 0 pretty quickly. Is this based on whois records or dns changes?

I don't know why it changes but it all depends on the domain itself.

    thanks

I think this could be because of two possible things:

    1) The site owner did some shady black hat techniques to pump up the PR just before selling it.

    2) A new part of the Google algorithm that they mentioned in their latest patent. When a domain suddenly has drastically different content/pages, the old links are disregarded.

I am surprised you have noticed the PR drop to 0 though. Did it drop to zero very quickly or did it happen to coincide with a PR update for all websites?

that would be so wrong of google to ignore older backlinks, if the links are still up then they should still be counted

IMHO, google also validates the working links.. once you have non-working links, your PR might be decrease or if you do not keep the entire previous contents, it's very possible that your PR would have been reset.

If you purchased an expired domain name it will hold on to it's pr for a
few months then it will go to pr 0 at the next pr update. You should
try to avoid expired domain names if possible.

When the domain expires the pagerank after a span of few months becomes null.To keep it static you have to keep it alive

I concur with others about avoiding expired domains if you want to keep PageRank and I'd advise doing a domain check for fake PR before purchasing any domain, try http://www.domainpagerank.com/

Old parked domains might getting backlink boost, but when it was purchased, the backlinks will be removed. Better purchase newly made domains and immediately put some good contents and few good backlinks.

try to avoid link from bad neighborhood if you know what i mean
get good backlinks from different sites, don't over use the backlink.
1 backlink from a trusted site is better than thousand links from other sites without rankings

Yeah, you really need to keep building those backlinks, otherwise your PR will drop. Avoid link farms.

Pagerank is calculated through backlinks, so if you want to maintain or to increase your pagerank, then you must get more quality backlinks.

When you buy a site, you do not buy the links. So if the links are from Forums, Blogs, etc., they just change the urls of the links to a new site. Also, there are many BlackHat ways to alter the PR toolbar to make a site look better.
