You meant, you uploaded the files via the cPanel ftp section? Hostgator is not a tool, it's a webhosting company.

If your using Firefox then download FireFTP http://fireftp.mozdev.org/ nice tool for uploading your files to your site and it's free.

 

PHPLD installation gives you step by step guidence. please check the install file from phpld2.0 zip file.

and also you get many mods contributed by mny great mod developers to turn your directory with SEO friendly and user friendly.
