You have to submit it to google. google (dot) com / add url... no space. I hope you got it. Then get links for your website. Cheers!

Submitting your sitemap.xml file to google through google webmaster tools is a quickfire way to tell google to spider your pages but google deserves the right to index your pages depending on the merit. Getting a link from a heavy traffic page to yours is another way to let google know about the existence of your page :)

Go to each of the search engines and look for the "submit a site" link and add your site. Then search for other sites like yours and see if they will add a link to your page if you add one to theirs. The more links you get the better your page rank will be.

The most sensible way to get your site indexed is building a couple of backlinks, that's considered more productive than submitting the site. Sitemaps surely hold good.

Social Bookmarking on digg, Furl, Reddit, stumble upon, Pligg powered websites help to get your website quickly indexed.
Other than that usual way is to ping your website to Googleblog search ping and submit your sitemap to google through google webmasters tools.
