You didn't mention buying links anywhere. I couldn't imagine doing an SEO campaign without buying links unless a person had an idea that was so revolutionary it could obtain a huge amount of links naturally.

What the hell is with people here with buying links? You can get great PR without spending a cent, but here people think it's a godsend.

By submitting to 10 - 15 social bookmarking sites, you can increase PR of your site from 0 to 3.

My very first site is a PR5 and I never bought a link for the site. It might be a lot more work but in the end it worked and cost me nothing.

That's not to say I haven't bought links for other sites.

You can increase your PR by buying high pr links, that doesn't mean you earned the pr which is what really matters.

PR is going to be absolute soon I predict!

Does making a site people enjoy using and want to recommend to others count as "so revolutionary?" Because a lot of people take that approach. A year from now, virtually everyone with decent PR will have taken that approach, if you believe Google on paid links. And considering a lot of the movements we've seen lately, I think the scale has tipped, and there's more reason to believe Google than there is to doubt them on this and similar issues.

And just to try on my Capitan Obvious hat, while no one who doesn't work at Google can say for sure (and even many who do work for Google), a person with "You will RANK HIGHER with links from Text Link Center" in their signature does seem to have a vested interested in spreading the belief that links are essential, and virtually the only factor that matters. Links are very important, but there are more web sites than my entire town has fingers to count that have earned tens of thousands of links, editorially, on merit, without spending a red cent on them.

This is nonsense! PR is something that only exists within the Google universe. Social bookmarking sites use nofollow links, and while some 3rd rate search engines don't understand rel="nofollow", Google was among the strongest lobbiests to fight for the non-vote links. Mainstream social bookmarking with do absolutely nothing for your PageRank.

I think the best thing you can do is focus on your content. If you have good original content everything else follows.

You are absolutely right when you say you do not need to speed a dime on links. I have not spent a single cent on links and as a matter of fact the only money I have ever spent was on a 125x125 banner ad and that was this month and I started my site Feb 2006.

The funny thing is I had completely forgotten that I posted this thread until today when I checked incoming traffic to my site.

Now for the people that responded that buying links is very important when trying to achieve PR ranking.

Take a look at the recent PageRank update were some very prominent high ranking sites got slammed on there ranking for buying those links.

My site on the other hand is still holding strong at PR5.

Better to focus on getting traffic and SERP than Pagerank....traffic is more important in our site...

crazyfish: You can't say your work cost you nothing…don't forget to put a value on your time. Personally I haven't gone down the link-buying route with any of my own sites or client sites, but the time I spent (or paid someone else) on natural link building equates to alot of money. If the trade-off from buying links works out cheaper (I imagine it will) then surely it's a valuable process.

However, one thing that concerns me is all the talk about Google cracking down on paid linking. Eventually, this will inevitably become obsolete.

Codythebest: I disagree. The PR algorithm is determined by backlinks and quality content etc. which is what gets your keywords to rank into the SERPS in the first place–therefore it's a measure of how likely you will get the traffic you require from your target keywords.

Obviously some people pay too much attention to PR, but it's still a good indicator that you are making progress in your quest to get more targeted traffic.

Just my opinion, everyone has one - as they do an arsehole ;)

Yeah, it truly should. And I think it's supposed to indirectly factor: if you have good content you should have more links. It'll be a great day when someone writes a program smart enough to actually read the content and make sense of it, huh? I know that's not an easy thing to do, but still we didn't go from not having computers to there being quad cores. The search engines could step up their efforts and push in the right direction, no?
