    Yes that's right, but search engine needs efforts your work done on directories, blogs, forums, social book marking, link exchange, article submissions,

    No any search engine can give you best results without doing all these process.

    What do you mean by promote your site to lots and lots directories? you mean it can give you targeted traffic or give you ranking? and paid directories give you ranking? or traffic?

    I am not agree with you, I don't thing that kind of things give you traffic. The real fact of seo and gain traffic is

    Quality Content + Good Natural Back Links = Get ranking and traffic

    Directories will help for keyword ranking, and a little bit of PR. So while one is waiting for the natural links to develop, directories offer a solution to start the link building and ranking processes. :)
