I've added my sites to directories and I've asked to exchange links with other sites. Quite often that's the last I ever hear and in my link never gets published. How long would you leave it after submitting to a directory or using a link exchange form before you remove the other person's link from your site? I don't want my sites to end up with hundreds of links that are never reciprocated unless I think the site is so good it can't be left out.
I know I might sound dumb but you could always buy the traffic from a similar themed website or sponsored SERP add. If you publish interesting, genuine, useful content - paid for visitors will bookmark you & return just like any other. Dont forget that traffic = more traffic. A few dollars spent on advirtising can return long term benefits as well short term traffic. Especially if you provide a way for them to share the website with friends (if it suited to that type of thing). Buying traffic can be more cost effective than you think & there are plenty of providers available.
