Paid advertising is a fast way to get traffic. You can lose a lot money quickly though with that method. As far as getting more free traffic you have to get your content, offer, message, whatever, out there in as many places as you can that are relevant to your blog or what ever you are promoting. Such as the social networking sites, document sharing sites, article sharing sites, ebook sharing sites, video sharing sites, forum posts, quest posting on blogs, etc.

 

I agree with Doug. But if you industry or niche is uncompetitive I've gotten 1st page rankings with in weeks. I think free search takes longer but it will pay off in the long run.

 

You have to focus on the long run if you wish to make a profit. It is hard, I know, but paid advertising usually results in a loss of $, not a gain.
