It all depends on how much traffic you want. If you want enough to pay your bills, then you are going to have to advertise. There is no other way. Only clueless noobs and complete morons, like the ones here, who have dead sites, think otherwise.
Why do you bother asking a generic question like this? No one will be able to give you an answer just from a single forum post.
