    I have never paid for traffic and i have been online for over 15 years.

    There's too much ways to gain traffic. No need to pay for it.
    I would rather spend the money on new software or things i don't have or didn't built.

    Social media has to be 1 marketing method you use besides writing guest blog posts on blogs related to your niche. You have a newspaper site and you want it to be popular to get loyal subscribers or visitors to read the news you write about.
