I find for the most satisfaction and overall better results i try and get sustained traffic rather than a spike of traffic from somewhere and that is usually done by steady, constant promotion and the regular adding of content to a site.

If you want traffic it's relatively easy.....utilize social bookmarking sites (stumbleupon, Digg, Delicious, etc) or even a paid bookmarking service like usocial.com you could also buy ppc traffic via google (which can get really expensive)....but at the end of the day it's not about traffic. It's quality traffic. Social bookmarking sites don't typically convert very well and I often get high bounce rates. If you really want quality results/sales/registrations etc it's going to take time, proper keyword research and hard work.
