As I am more getting down to understand SEO work coming across new things, earlier i thought getting good PR gets you good traffic but after reading one article seems I've miss understood it and now SERP is what matters for traffic.

can someone give some info why these two are different and why people focus so much on getting PRs.

and if someone wants to improve SERP what all can be done to achieve so

Google toolbar PR is not a good judge of your sites ranking; it does not reflect much on SERP. For traffic, you want to have the highest SERP possible. Number one slot gets much, much more traffic than the second. The second gets far more traffic than the third and so on.

PR used to be very importand for SERPS, that is not the case anymore.
I find it usefull to find baclinks from a variety of sources. Forums, blogs, directories and more.

you can use directory submission tools to help rank your sites better in the serps. check this website http://directorysubmissiontools.com it will submit to 1400 large directories. just use relevant key words when you submit your website and make sure your anchor text is the keyword you wish to rank for. google no longer rate sites on PR as much as they did in the past submitting to the service above will increase your rankings.

I don't think such submission will help. In fact all cheap methods (for example spamming blogs, forums and directory as well as article submissions) aren't effective today. Google is smarter than that so it recognizes such links. Google also knows whether a link is from a sidebar or a footer or not. But Google likes natural links, especially if they are old. So the main question is how to get or buy such natural links...

The quality of backlinks matters much more than their quantity
Try as much as possible to get backlinks from sites related to your site's niche
Blog commenting and forum signatures are the easiest methods for getting backlinks
Directory submission is easy as well, some people already do it with some form of software

I get this question all the time from people using our service. At first they worry that there site maybe penalised for submitting to so many directories all at once, but then see for them selves that is not the case. Our fast directory submitter will not have your site penalised or blacklisted as the directories we submit to vary there approval times. Some directories we submit to approve daily, some weekly and some monthly. This means your directory submission will look extremely natural and manual. Thus meaning you will not get over flood of 1400 links all at once. Another fact to take into consideration is that each directory we submit to will be crawled by Search engines at different frequencies. Google maybe smartish but if a link is not picked up from search engines how can it be classed as spam? If a site is approved on differnt days what tells google that its not a real person doing it? Nothing. I agree that spamming blogs and forums will be classed as spam to google but thats only because it all happens in one shot. Another thing to note is with the directoires its placed in niche sections of sites that have relvent content to your site thus helping you rank better. google changed how much it weighs PR vs where your site ranks, a while ago.

Start link building from category oriented sites, also the links that you are building should be the quality one.

I would agree that automatic submission doesn't help as I've tried it myself and it didn't do much in fact. everyone who has replied if I am not mistaken is referring to PRs and not SERP. so how does one go about building SERP

You need to build quality back links. Build links through different sources like: article submissions, directory submissions, forum posting, blog posting, blog commenting etc. Links form high PR sites are more effective.

    Hi,

Firstly, I would like to mention that high PR pages or sites would usually come with high quality page contents and back links although they might not drive direct traffics. These 2 factors would also be essential for having a nicer SERP.

If you want to improve SERP, you need to update your sites with niche relative, keyword-rich page contents regularly and increasing backlinks using your targeted keywords as anchor text stably.

    all the best,

Do on-page optimization first then proceed to build more links for your site and use your keyword as your anchor text.

Effective keywords are excellent for long term improvement of SERP's. Short term effects like a press release or social media promotion can have a temporary effect but it is keywords and backlinks for sustained enhancement of your standing in the SERP.

    Cheers
