It really depends on your niche, and the keywords you would like people to search for when they want to find your site, if you choose a very competitive niche, you will find it hard to get traffic, unless you can get backlinks from authority sites based on those niches

 

Off page optimization work is most important like article submission, forum posting, press release, directory submission, social bookmarking and the most important is social networking sites(facebook).

Better you can take part in face book, twitter. They are good traffic driving mediums.

 

Your website content should be with more relevant keywords and you should have a quality back links.
