Forums can make a couple grand a month with decent traffic. .4ctr is pretty normal but you should generate lots of impressions due to the dynamic nature of a forum coupled with visitor loyalty.

Some good placements I've found with forums are:

    -leaderboard under nav bar
-leaderboard or block ad under first post
-banner or leaderboard under last post

I've had my own forum before that generated abouot the same traffic as yours, and with those ad positions my CTR was between 1-2%.

"A couple grand a month with decent traffic"? Wow, someone's being overly optimistic. Forums are notorious for generating very low returns, even if you have massive traffic. Why? Because people don't go to click ads, and forget about your regulars clicking. Your only real way to make appreciable income with forums is to have a high-paying keyword so each click will be worth more. The best way to make money off forums is to use a CPM network and slap on a banner or two.

I have found image adverts with forums are more productive. Text at the top and image down the side or bottom. Sometimes people are curious.

And yes, the big forums do make good $

Try Pay Per Impression instead of Pay Per Click.Normally, for a forum,it is better to use Pay Per Impression since they normally have massive amount of traffic

Interesting. I have found quite the opposite with my community. Text brings much more revenue for me.

All time, my CTR is .66%

I think 4% CTR on a forum is being rather optimistic.

Easy to say, hard to prove. Give me a board name (url) and some numbers here, instead of just throwing out anecdotes. Everything I say is from personal experience. But if you don't run those "big forums" that "make good $", and can prove it, you can't really say now, can you?

If adsense doesn't go well, which it usually doesn't at first (but when you get big you will earn a lot) I suggest using CJ or ClickBank for commission - that way you get a certian amount :)

40 ctr is not bad at all, as your forum is new so it takes time to generate suitable amount of visitors, try to have more quality posting..i have a fourm www.digitaltalks.com but didnt placed adsence adds yet!

I get more than 1,000 pageviews a day on my forum, but did not monitize it yet. What is a good point to monetize

JackBurton2006 nailed it. I have a busy forum with several thousand loyal members. I display the AdSense leaderboard below the last post in a thread. I generally have over 10,000 impressions a day and a CTR of 0.4 - 0.5%. I don't know that you can get much better than that on most forums due to the fact that members who return every day aren't likely to click the ads frequently. Think about it; how often do you click the ads here on the DP forum? I appreciate the information I get here, but have only clicked on one banner in the many times I've read the board.

You're only hope is to have tremendous traffic or to carefully incent readers to click the posts. Good luck.

    I agree,

Digitalpoint makes around $10k - $30k from Adsense per month and it's most probably not just from the forums and even if it was, the alexa ranking is around 200 - 300, which is very good meaning that it gets a very good amount of traffic to reach that alexa rank.

It's in the top 200 - 300 most popular sites on the web, although it's not entirely accurate, getting it to 200 - 300 is good.

As above posts state there is lots of proof that big busy forums make good $ such as has been well documented here at DP and other big busy forums in their niche. There is no need for me to provide stats on well known facts.
