I just joined Twitter myself, but it's already proving to be a great way to network for many people I know. Thanks for following, by the way - I've done the same for you. I would recommend changing your background and colors to match your overall scheme and feel, sort of as if to get the right message across. And then interact with other people and start talking to them, not just on Twitter but all over the place, and slowly work on building up your list of followers. The higher it is, the easier to network and drive traffic with it, of course.

I add people as a follower and do the @username and eventually they notice you and most people then add you. Also doing a post on your blog saying you use twitter helps btw I am budcalabrese on twitter say hi and I will follow you.
you can use twiends, but those traffic are not targeted, or otherwise use facebook twitter following pages and groups
i think knowing how to interact with with the people to market their own products is the key of success in twitter

Follow a bunch of people then un-follow the people that don't follow you back. Find someone in your niche that has a bunch of followers and add the people that are following them. That way you can target people in your market instead of a bunch of randoms.
