Two most important factors: 1) Ad placement and 2) Ad relevancy. Put your ads where people will see them: top left of the site, and above or embedded in your main content area... Don't put them on the left of your site or in the footer or nav bar. Regarding ad relevancy, you should blog about keywords that you know people are buying ads for. If there aren't any advertisers in that niche, you need to blog on different keywords...
