i would suggest such social networking sites as facebook but alas they are no follow so the only thing they generate is traffic not links.

Good content creates traffic and backlinks. That much is certain. For what advertising I do, I already have 14 quality backlinks for creating my articles on my website gnarfard.com

 

I see lots of great blogs with good content with very few links. The reason is simple you must learn to promote your blog. If people can't find your great content they can not link.

 

Are all these link gathering options really necessary?

I would prefer to spend an hour writing an excellent article about the content of my website and submit it to a few social bookmarking sites like digg for example. Others will see my article and link to it from places all over the web.
This is all I do now.
