Click rates depend on how well the ads are positioned in your content, the relevancy of the ads to the visitors' interests, whether your visitors are return visitors who are blind to the ads, and whether your content is so satisfying to your visitors that they have no reason to click ads for more.

adsense publishers have no way of knowing what the conversion rates are for the ads that appear on their websites... all we have is epc(earnings per click) to use as a guideline for how good our traffic is.

    Here are my tips:

Check your traffic sources, and try to get more search engine traffic which generally converts better. To get more SE traffic, create a lot of great, unique content with good SEO. If your content is good, people will also link to it, which again works in your favor in the SEs.

If some pages are visited by regular visitors, rotate ad colors or use CPM ads.

Make sure you have the best ad units, placement and colors. Only way to know for sure is to test, use A/B testing to make it accurate. To change placements and site design, you can use google website optimizer, and for ad unit size and colors use a simple A/B script found here: http://adsense.blogspot.com/2006/08/abcs-of-ab-testing.html

Also, track ad units with channels and make sure the best performing units are the first ones to appear in your html code. In fact, if nobody clicks the latter units the best thing might be to remove those units alltogether. That will not increase CTR but it makes sure only the highest bidding ads are showing.

This can be due to many factors :

    - Ad placement
    - Ad pattern
    - Ad relevancy
    - Traffic ( targeted or not ? )
    - Mostly repeated visitors
    - Low CTR niche ( not much you can do except to get more traffic to increase earnings )

Analyze the above and do the needful ;)

Change your colors and placement on a regular basis so that your visitors don't get ad blindness.

I assume that since you're stating it is possible to use Website Optimizer for that purpose, that you have done it yourself - correct? How do you set adsense clicks as a conversion goal in Website Optimizer? I've been searching long & hard for a way to do this and not been able to find out how. The closest thing I've been able to find is a way to track clicks on regular links as explained here:

    http://www.google.com/support/websiteoptimizer/bin/answer.py?answer=93181&topic=14314

....but I can't find a way to do it for Adsense clicks. Please enlighten me.

    Thank you.

I have a site getting about 50 unique hits/day but getting good earning (conversion) since it was getting targetted traffic. Another one, a portal of articles getting 1,000 unique hits/day, is getting less.

HAHAH, Use the large square text ad format. Its the best. Imbed it in your content on the top of the page. BEST!!!
Dont forget to thank me when your conversion rates double overnight!

Cataclysmic: U don't understand "getting targetted traffic"?

targetted traffic = higher adsense ads conversion rate
