Hi, There are lot of threads on this forum that had dealt justice to this topic in the time past. With the paid traffic, your traffic needs can be met in a day but with free traffic, one can actually say categorically the duration. It all depends on the effort and time you are willing to invest. Lots of fresh content, lots of work and it is possible. I have not taken mine to that level but since January I have taken it from 20,000 a month to 60,000 a month (for August) and it is growing more and more and I expect September to make 70,000. I may point out my traffic is based around just daily blogging and social media and very little effort. Where as if you spent more time on podcasts, video marketing and SEO you could expand it much quicker. I would avoid paid traffic unless you know what you are doing! Because you could end up out of pocket and when you do the traffic must then lead to paid subscribers or long term traffic otherwise we are constantly starting again and paying for traffic. There are many ways in getting many traffic. Use social media in getting traffic, try to create a page for your website and try to make a group related to your niche and add your friends to the group. Used a "auto add script" to add your friends, you can search the script to google. Post on the group one articles and pinned it or try to make doc file and post the URL of your post and pinned it to group. You can also try to submit your post to bookmarking site like pinterest, stumbleupon,reddit and delicious.
I think it depends if you want to just sell something or if you want to get people results and get repeat buyers that do long term business and recommend you to others in that niche. A lot of very successful marketers (with a business that has the components that work for them) can get traffic easily but it's really not that important to be on the search engines. People looking on the search engines are people that really don't know you yet and are mostly browsers or people looking for something that is related to what you have. Direct targeted traffic I believe is the best but you might want to look into how to find your top traffic sources your competitors dont know about and be able to move to the next secret one you have on your list when things dry up or when competitors start to flood your traffic sources. If trafffic is forced to a site or a lot of people are buying the same thing that teaches the same traffic strategy for everyone, it usually drops of the map just when you start doing really well.
Let say you have tons of traffic in your website then you are satisfied? I don't think so because most of the traffic doesn't convert at all and that's the reality. Its not just the traffic it must have engagement to the targeted audience.
I would say not to get to focused on the numbers. Building that much traffic that fast from scratch takes a lot of work. I would say focus on getting as much targeted traffic as possible. 20,000 visitors that are not interested in what you have to offer is not as good as 5,000 that will actually subscribe to your email list, purchase your product or simply share your content will be much better for you. If traffic is just what you are looking for focus on SEO and Content Marketing. I would start by using strong keyword phrases. My favorite is Google Keyword Planner. There are plenty tools but I like to get my traffic from the source. Next, you need a lot of fresh content on you website. This is where a blog is recommended. Create as many post as possible that is 2,000 words or more. Post this length does much better in search rankings. Now, focus on frequency. As I mentioned Google likes fresh content so posting 2,000 plus word post 2 or 3 times a week will get you noticed by Google much quicker. Finally, promote, promote, promote! After you click publish your work isn't done. You have to utilize social media, niche communities, forums like this and so on. Using these tips above is not easy to do especially if you are doing this alone but this is surely effective if you can get this accomplished. I hope this helps?
I too agree with the common punch line, "Quality matters rather than quantity". So building that much traffic is waste of your hard works and efforts if they are not cnverting into profit. They are of no use if they wouldn't come back again or make it to your email list. So I would prefer to go slow and steady rather than buying paid traffic or something else like that.
If you target keywords that are not competitive, you can get around 5k/ day traffic. Ensure good keyword targeted content and quality links.
Go with PPC... It's not so easy do achieve something so big... 20k per day is 600k per month... Which even sites that were created 2+ years ago sometimes can't achieve... You can boost traffic with Social Media sites, but be sure NOT to spam!!!

Two options (Yor can apply both) Fast one, money and paid ads. If money ends, traffic ends... Second one, slowest, create value content for your user, fresh and new content. Users will share it, google will like it and visits will start flowing. Ok, there is one more, black seo. Not recommended
