Depends on what key words you are targeting and what you are doing. You can waste a huge amount of time following all the advice you get. You have to filter out the noise and focus on stuff that works. Forget about PR. Remove it from your toolbar and put a plastic bucket on your head every time someone mentions it. Build a word picture for Google using your title tags. Build targeted back links using blog posts, press releases and articles. Posts, features, and articles are still good. Place your links wherever you can find a source of one way do follow links. But ensure you don't duplicate your content and as far as possible that the links you are posting are going to last. You also want directory links but these are not as effective as they used to be. Use directories as a source of deep links - links that point to your internal pages. Again look for sites that are going to last. It is pointless placing links on sites which fall over after the first year.

There are no quick solutiuons. You have to work smart, slowly and steadily.
